Introduction to Career Planning Misconceptions

from: career-planning.report-here.com

We will all develop some kind of career throughout our lives, planned or otherwise. When some people find a job they're often so happy that they're on any kind of career path, that they are blissfully unaware that they may well end up dissatisfied further down the road. This happens when long-term career matching analysis (for example) has not been performed before accepting a job. This lack of planning may mean that a person will move from one job to another, without ever finding the right career for them. This is the primary reason why an introduction to career planning should implemented for everyone at the earliest stage possible.

Firstly you will need to be made aware of some of the most common career planning misconceptions that many people still hold. You will probably encounter them sooner or later so it's better to be prepared for them when they arise. Some of the misconceptions about career planning are...

1. Career planning is easy : While this may hold true for people, they most likely don't fully prepare a long-term career plan complete with contingencies for overcoming potential obstacles. Choosing a career can be a simple decision, but staying in one is not when you realize that you've not chosen properly and ended up with the wrong career. You can then end up skipping from job to job, hoping for the best.

Career planning is not a once in a lifetime process. On the contrary, your career plan should be looked at regularly to be able to evaluate your current situation, and how you can further improve your career development. Regular career plan reviews make sure you stay on track and don't start drifting or start to stagnate in your current job.

2. You can just get a list of careers and pick one you like the look of : Lists presented by so-called career experts should not form the basis of your decision. Remember that these lists can change quickly over time and this year's industry trends will almost certainly change in the following years. These lists may appeal and be effective to some, but you're advised to approach career development by carefully analyzing your interests, skills, experience, personality, values, etc. and then performing the more sophisticated process of career matching based on your true profile.

But when looking through lists of careers for ideas, you must take into account your skills and interests. A certain career may sound great but that does not mean it will suit you perfectly. Career lists should only serve to give you some ideas as to what's out there, and not be a basis for your career decisions.

3. Any career you choose will remain your career for life : With the fast moving ever-changing jobs market of today, this couldn't be further from the truth. Career planning is therefore more important today than it's ever been. And that's why you should review your career plan on a regular basis. No one is forcing you to remain in your career. You can always decide to make a change anytime you feel like it. But make sure that any changes you make are in line with your comprehensive career plan, so that you stay on track with your career path. Sometimes you have to take a step sideways or even backwards to get yourself back on the right career path.

4. Have a career expert pick a career for you : As with using a career list, you should only use the advice of career planning experts as a guide to planning a career. Experts should not choose your career for you. Only you, with your unique likes, dislikes, and interests can make the right career choices for you. However, you are well advised to enlist their help when you're finding it hard to make a decision regarding your career. But make sure you're the one making the final decision.

5. Having a successful career equates to earning lots of money : Money is of course a major consideration when choosing a career, however it should not necessarily be the most important overriding factor. Career satisfaction has been shown in several studies to be independent from the level of income. It seems that enjoying your career is more important to most people. We hope this introduction to career planning will help to point you in the right direction towards long-term career satisfaction.
